To support the convergence between broadcast and on-demand paradigms the BBC has merged its product and software engineering capability with the BBC’s physical archives to form BBC Archives Technology & Services. In our Hybrid Cloud Archive Programme we seek to better serve our audiences and deliver better value for the licence fee payers by creating a software defined object store, that works natively in the cloud augmenting more traditional Media Asset Management Systems.  All the BBC’s digital archive holdings is scheduled to be moved to the cloud, starting in summer 2022 with some on-premises legacy infrastructure being retired. In this presentation we will further expand on the direction of travel, highlight some of the pitfalls, challenges and opportunities presented by a hybrid cloud archive and share our learnings to date, to aid other broadcasters understanding of what’s involved and how we plan to operate and mitigate risks.
